Repository metrics are context, not quality scores. Active installations measure adoption and can strongly reflect a plugin’s age and historical popularity. Ratings, recent updates and “Tested up to” metadata also do not guarantee modern code, error-free operation, security, feature completeness or suitability for a particular site. Why active installs don’t tell the whole story →

WP PlugIndex currently records Tangleroot Dependency Mapper version 1.2.1 as active, updated 3d ago and tested up to WordPress 7.1.

Overview

About this plugin

” Tangleroot answers it before you find out the hard way.

Install it, run a scan, and Tangleroot builds a live map of your site’s architecture — every plugin, theme, page, post type, taxonomy, shortcode, Gutenberg block, menu and widget, along with the relationships between them. Deactivate a form plugin and Tangleroot already knows which pages use it, with the actual shortcode or block reference as evidence, not a guess.

Every relationship comes with a confidence label, so you always know whether Tangleroot found direct proof or is flagging something worth double-checking. Search for any component, open its relationship graph, and trace what it touches up to three levels deep — enough to catch most real-world breakage before it happens. Before you deactivate a plugin, delete a page, or switch a template, run it through Impact Explorer to see exactly what’s connected to it.

Tangleroot reports what it found. It does not tell you a change is “safe” or that “nothing will break” — where the evidence is uncertain, it says so, and critical or site-wide warnings are never hidden behind a paywall at any plan level.

What’s included, free, on unlimited sites

  • Full discovery: plugins, themes, pages, posts, custom post types, taxonomies, menus, widgets, shortcodes and Gutenberg blocks
  • Core relationship detection between all of the above, with evidence and a confidence rating on every result
  • A searchable, visual relationship graph and full component detail view
  • Impact Explorer, tracing direct and indirect relationships up to 3 levels deep
  • Critical and site-wide dependency warnings, at every plan level
  • Manual scans, on demand, plus 30 days of change history
  • On-screen architecture and change summaries

What Tangleroot does not do

It never modifies plugins, themes, posts, pages or settings, and never activates or deactivates anything for you — it only reads and reports. It does not send your site’s content anywhere: everything above runs entirely on your own server.

Tangleroot Pro

com for sites that need more: provider-specific detectors for tools like WooCommerce, Elementor, Divi and Bricks; runtime, cron and database detection; impact tracing up to 10 levels deep; Architecture Snapshots you can compare over time; scheduled scans; JSON/CSV/PDF exports; and optional AI explanations using your own API key. Pro is a separate download with its own listing — nothing in this free version is disabled, limited-time, or nagging you to upgrade.
