Independent search

How WP PlugIndex Search Works

WP PlugIndex uses public WordPress.org plugin data, but builds and searches its own independent index. That means result order can differ from the WordPress.org directory search.

01

Search starts with what you asked for

Plugin names matter, but WP PlugIndex is also designed to match features and practical use cases. This helps searches such as “SMTP”, “error logs” or “role management” surface plugins that describe the same capability in different ways.

02

Compatibility is visible

Normal search includes plugins whose Tested up to value is within the latest three WordPress release branches. Relevance to the search comes first; compatibility and maintenance help order results within the same relevance level.

03

Maintenance activity matters

Normal search results also require an active plugin updated on WordPress.org within the last 365 days. The freshness and compatibility gates work together, so a recent readme change cannot make a plugin tested only against an old WordPress generation reappear in normal search.

04

The index stays close to WordPress.org

WP PlugIndex synchronizes public plugin-directory information on a frequent schedule. WordPress.org remains the source of plugin metadata; WP PlugIndex provides an independent search and discovery layer over that public data.

Why independent?

Useful relevance can be different from popularity.

Broad metadata matches and popularity can make a useful plugin harder to discover. WP PlugIndex does not use active-install count as a search ranking signal. Results focus on the requested capability, then use compatibility and maintenance as context. Results with the same internal match strength can rotate so equally strong options are not locked into one permanent order.

The exact ranking implementation, private demand analysis and internal search-quality diagnostics are not published.

Independent project

WP PlugIndex is an independent project and is not affiliated with or endorsed by WordPress.org, Automattic or the WordPress Foundation. Plugin information is sourced from the public WordPress.org plugin directory.
