Repository metrics are context, not quality scores. Active installations measure adoption and can strongly reflect a plugin’s age and historical popularity. WP PlugIndex currently records Root Category Recent Posts version 1.2 as active, updated 12y ago and tested up to WordPress 3.6.

This widget will find the root category which the current post (or category) depends.
Once done, it will display the latest posts from the root category, not for the entire site.
Based on the “Recent post” widget, you will find the same parameters with a new checkbox: you will be able to add the category name in titles.

The widget is named “Articles Recents” on the sidebar.
Not yet marked as tested with WordPress 7.1. WordPress.org currently lists Tested up to 3.6.
“Tested up to” is directory metadata supplied by the plugin author. WP PlugIndex does not turn an older declaration into a claim that the plugin is incompatible.
