About this plugin
WooCommerce shows a placeholder when a product category has no thumbnail. Carbon Based Auto Category Thumbnails for WooCommerce uses a product image from that category instead, and leaves categories that already have a thumbnail alone.
Features
- Empty categories only – A category with its own thumbnail is not replaced.
- Product image – Chooses a published product image. Newest by default, or random when that category is refreshed.
- Child categories – Optional lookup in child categories when the parent has no product image.
- In stock only – On by default. Skips out-of-stock products even when the shop still lists them. Selling the last copy queues the next in-stock cover.
- Saved images – The shop shows the saved choice. Publishing or updating a product queues that category and its parents for a background refresh. A separate scheduled job replaces images after the cache period, in small batches. A page view does not rebuild every category.
- Classic grids, shortcode, and blocks – Category archives, the shop page, the product categories shortcode, and the Product Categories block.
- Excluded images – Comma-separated Media Library IDs that are never chosen.
- Refresh and test – Refresh saved images from the settings screen, or test one category ID.
Requires WooCommerce. Settings are under Carbon Based > Auto Category Thumbnails.

- Stores with many product categories and no time to upload a thumbnail for each one.
- Shops that want a real product picture instead of the WooCommerce placeholder.
- Sites that already set some category images by hand and want the rest filled in.
